Drive

JJ is learning how to drive. Today (Sunday) I woke up sometime at 10 in the morning. My other nephew, Nicolai, likes to randomly pass by the house and ring the doorbell until someone answers. I don’t respond to this very well, but I’ve made an exception with Nico since he is so damned stubborn sometimes.
JJ wanted to take some pictures of the car.
My first car was a red 1987 Honda Prelude. It actually had race tires so the thing felt like I was driving some box with wheels. Eventually I got rid of those and put on “normal” tires. The radio worked half the time and the air never really did a good job. But it was still my ride, so to speak.
That Honda would eventually be sold off and I would return to using the family’s 1992 Toyota Corolla. It looks horrible: it needs a paint job and a few weeks ago a friend ripped one of the door handles right off by applying too much pressure to the brittle thing. I don’t blame him - the car is old.
But back to JJ… He’s taking driving school, so he doesn’t even have a license yet. But his folks stood firm at some dealership and his first car will be a Mitsubishi Eclipse.

You can thank “The Fast and The Furious” for JJ’s mad enthusiasm towards his car. I’m actually not kidding about that. I said to him what your parents or elders might have said to you: “You’re one lucky kid. I didn’t have this when I was younger.”

My first car was a 1986 Oldsmobile Calais. You would think I would have thought it was a pretty sorry car, but I kind of liked it. And besides, when you’re in high school, any car is better than no car.

I drive high HP sports cars all the time: Datsun/Nissan Z-cars (240Z and RHD JDM 1979 Fairlady Z-L 2by2). On a note, I really disliked F&F; so not real! Anyway, I have found that it’s not defensive driving, as the teacher will tell you, but OFENSIVE in the real world. Take a more proactive approach to spotting situations and taking action. Yes, I know what the drivers Ed teaches you, but tell him that it’s junk. Once you get out on the road, and drive for a few YEARS (I think we older people know this), then you might have proven yourself. It took me totaling two cars (not Z-cars) to learn everything I know now. Also, remind him to never trust anyone else on the road; suspect that everyone could be a potential hazard. Like: “Is that car really going to turn, or does he just have his blinker on?”. Never trust the other drivers to do what you think they are; sometimes it will be just the opposite.
If someone were going to by me a car in that price range, I would get a new Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V! You can’t top the 180hp from that 2.5ltr N/A. The SE-R and in particular the Spec V, is the only front wheel drive car set up to take advantage of the FF platform.
Or, better yet a Nissan 350Z would be great, or just go beyond that, maybe something like a R34 Skyline GT-R V-spec II!
AND REMEMBER: Thou shall not rice out your ride! No, wings, no neon, no rice! KEEP IT REAL!
